102. First Shadow World (A Theoretical Fiction)
Say: The signifier exists. Then that there is a version of the world that is temporally in front of the world as it is experienced, the space of pre-processing the phenomena that are taken in by the relatively cumbersome apparatus of consciousness and even more cumbersome apparatus of attention.
Say: The signifier exists materially. This is a statement about writing. Writing becomes the medium for statements about language. The physical characteristics of writing imprint themselves on how speech is imagined, and in that way become the pre-images of sounds. The space of emergences is shaped by the geometries of letters. The geometries of letters are angles and shapes and negative spaces and the effects of weights and fonts. The geometries of letters are the ways they are positioned sequentially in a white space.
Say: The ordering of letters is an ordering of the world. An ordering of letters is a theory of time. The geometries of letters articulate a kind of perspective. The geometries of letters are an effect of perspective. Perspective is a construction. The vanishing point is the convergence of an infinite number of lines. It is a disappearing sun. All rays point to it. To construct linear perspectives angles in the world must be transformed. The image that is produced involves angles that differ from those which are required to produce it. The machinery of production disappears into what it produces. This is an everyday dimensional shift.
In the non-linear spaces that structure the linear the workings of being unfold through the convergences of aspects of an environment with the electrical and the imaginary. This space is the undercarriage of the picture world; what holds it up and keeps it from buckling under the weight of its thinness. It is invisible within what it produces in way that a carrier signal is inaudible in the heterodyne of audition.
